It is the county seat of Mercer CountyGR6. Harrodsburg was founded in 1774 by James Harrod, and was initially known as Harrod's Town or Harrodstown. The settlement was abandoned as a result of attacks by Native Americans in Dunmore's War that same year, but was resettled in 1775, nominally part of the proposed Transylvania colony. Transylvania was invalidated when Kentucky became a county of Virginia in 1776. Harrodsburg was the scene of much fighting with Native Americans during the American Revolutionary War. Harrodsburg is located at 37°45′50″N, 84°50′46″W (37.764019, -84.845974)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.8 km² (5.3 mi²), all land. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 8,014 people, 3,449 households, and 2,234 families residing in the city. The population density was 582.7/km² (1,510.5/mi²). There were 3,709 housing units at an average density of 269.7/km² (699.1/mi²).
